'The Bike Hangout'

The building lands on the slipway of the SS great eastern. A historic site, which has been overlooked and somewhat abandoned. The slipway’s wooden beams that have stood there for over 150 years are the only remaining fragments of the site. Inspired by the abandoned fragments of the site, I found my own abandoned fragment on the shore of Thames at low tide, which was a bike. This led to me making the programme for the building to be a bike hangout for teenagers who may consider them as lost fragments and are looking for a place to give themselves purpose and a sense of belonging.

The bike hangout acts as hub for these young teenagers to go and meet other kids who have a similar passion for bikes. The building includes a workshop for them to work on their bikes, and a social area to hangout, along with the living quarters for a full time caretaker called Manny. Manny is the enthusiastic caretaker of the bike hangout. He lives full time in the building and treats it as his home. Sadly, his only company is the kids and teens that are members of the hangout. Apart from that, he is alone with only his collection of memorabilia from his glory days and some less child friendly posters to keep him company. Manny could be considered as the most lost fragment of them all.
